

The heavy double doors creaked shut, sealing the room in a silence so thick it felt physical. The chamber was vast, a cavern of dark obsidian walls and deep mahogany panels that seemed to swallow the dim light. At its center stretched a thirty-foot slab of black Carrara marble, its surface polished to such a high mirror finish that the overhead chandelier reflected off it like a pale sun trapped in deep water.
